About Us

New Mexico Speech and Debate has a long, impressive history with forensics. New Mexico has produced numerous national champions, hosted the National Tournament in the 1960s, and produced thousands of successful alumni. Our alumni have gone on to become lawyers, doctors, elected officials, business owners, and many more.

Mission
The NMSDA promotes Speech and Debate activities as a means to develop a student’s essential life skills and values.

Vision
Our vision is that every student in the state of New Mexico will be empowered to become an effective communicator, ethical individual, critical thinker, and leader in a democratic society.

Ethics Statement

The New Mexico Speech and Debate Association consents to the Code of Honor as adopted by the National Speech and Debate Association and expects all students and coaches to follow accordingly to these standards.

Students: “As a member of the National Speech & Debate Association,
I pledge to uphold the highest standards of integrity, humility, respect,
leadership and service in the pursuit of excellence.”

Coaches: “The function of a coach is to educate students
through participation in speech and debate.
Students should be treated with the utmost respect, and their welfare
should be considered in decisions by coaches at all times.”

The safety of our students, fellow coaches, and community volunteers is a primary concern of the New Mexico Speech and Debate Association. Should anyone ever feel endangered, threatened, helpless, or taken advantage of while participating in this activity, or others, they are encouraged to report suspicious behavior to a school official, teacher, coach, parent, or teammate. Unethical behavior or mistreatment of students should be reported to a school official or the local authorities. Appropriate actions will be taken by school officials and authorities concerning all reported behaviors.

The New Mexico Speech and Debate Association is a safe, inclusive place for all.
